Funding Opportunity for Farmers: On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF)
The Government of Canada’s On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) provides farmers across the country with access to significant cost-share funding to improve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen farm resilience.
What is OFCAF?
OFCAF – short for the On-Climate Action Fund – is a Canadian federal program launched under the broader Agricultural Climate Solutions agenda. It provides direct funding support to help farmers adopt Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) that protect the environment and improve productivity.
The program focuses on three main practices:
- Nitrogen Management – Optimize fertilizer use through soil sampling, nutrient management, planning, and precision application.
- Cover Cropping – Add cover crops to improve soil health, reduce erosion, and capture carbon.
- Rotational Grazing – Invest in fencing, water systems, and forage planning to support healthier pastures and livestock.
Why Should Farmers Apply?
- Up to 85-90% of costs covered – With maximums ranging from $75,000 to $100,000 per farm over the program period.
- Building long-term resilience – Improve soil health.
- Boost profitability – Reduce input costs, enhance yields, and make better use of land.
- Plan with expert support – Work with Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) or Professional Agrologists (PAgs) to build a customized plan for your operation.
How to Apply?
Applications must be made through your province’s regional delivery partner and include a BMP Action Plan developed with a Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) or Professional Agrologist (PAgs). Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s important to connect with the appropriate organization in your region as soon as possible.
Regional Delivery Partners:
- Alberta – RDAR (Results Driven Agriculture Research)
- Ontario – OSCIA (Ontario Soil & Crop Improvement Association)
- British Columbia & Yukon– IAF (Investment Agriculture Foundation)
- Nova Scotia – Perennia
- Newfoundland & Labrador – NLFA (Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture)
- Other provinces/regions – Local partners designated by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
If you’re looking to improve soil health, reduce emissions, and lower input costs, OFCAF is a golden opportunity.
